Hello Stop Motion Fans! We have had a busy 2 weeks with the Comiccon madness here in Montreal. We reached out to 5200 friends on the show floor and the team did an amazing job at spreading the word about the festival. A special thanks goes to them!

Bonjour les amis, j’espère que votre mois de septembre se déroule bien! De notre côté, ce fut la folie du Comiccon de Montréal où nous avons rencontré 5200 amis au salon des exposants! Je tiens à remercier tous nos bénévoles qui nous ont aidés lors de cet évènement.

20th anniversary screening of The Nightmare before Christmas

The Montreal Stop Motion Film festival is celebrating the 20th anniversary of The Nightmare Before Christmas. Director Henry Selick and animator, Anthony Scott, will be presenting the film. They will share stories and behind-the-scenes tidbits from this landmark production and will then participate in a Q&A. There will also be a special appearance by Jack, and other surprises. All of this will be followed by the now infamous festival cake. Scrumptious!
Projection 20ième anniversaire de L’étrange Noël de Monsieur Jack

Afin de célébrer le 20ième anniversaire de la sortie du film L’étrange Noël de Monsieur Jack (The Nightmare Before Christmas), le festival lancera ses festivités le vendredi 18 octobre à 19h avec une projection spéciale du film en présence du réalisateur Henry Selick et de l’animateur Anthony Scott. Ils nous feront part de leur expérience sur la conception de cette œuvre cinématographique utilisant la technique de Stop Motion. Le tout sera suivi d’une période de questions, d’une apparition de Jack, d’une projection surprise et bien sûr, du fameux gâteau d’ouverture du festival! (la présentation sera en anglais)

As a kid, Henry Selick drew all the time – eagles, horses, lions and, later, Jaguar XKE’s. And he loved unusual and scary animation, like Night on Bald Mountain from “Fantasia” or “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” and he especially loved the Ray Harryhausen’s stop-motion features. Selick took his first animation course at Syracuse University where teacher Bruce McCurdy presented the amazing films of Caroline Leaf, Co Hoedeman, Ryan Larkin and others from the National Film Board. Selick was hooked on animation from that time onward.

During his academic years, he made his first animated film “Tube Tales” (nominated for Student Academy Award) and later was hired at Disney. Multiple projects kept him busy until 1990 where he was asked to direct Nightmare before Christmas, which was followed by James and the Giant Peach, Monkeybone, and, more recently Coraline, which was nominated for an Academy Award. Selick is presently looking at several animated projects as well as live-action for the upcoming year.

Étant tout jeune, Henry Selick dessinait tout le temps ; des aigles, des chevaux, des lions et, plus tard, la fameuse Jaguar XKE. Il aimait les choses insolites et effrayantes en animation, comme une nuit sur le Mont Chauve du film “Fantasia” ou “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow”. Il aimait particulièrement les films de Ray Harryhausen qui utilisait la technique de Stop Motion pour donner vie à des créatures mythiques. Selick a pris son premier cours d’animation à l’Université de Syracuse, où l’enseignant Bruce McCurdy présentait les films de Caroline Leaf, Co Hoedeman, Ryan Larkin et d’autres animateurs de l’Office National du Film. Durant ses années universitaires, il réalise son premier film “Tube Tales” (nominé pour le Prix de l’Académie pour étudiants) avant d’être embauché chez Disney. Anthony Scott
got his start as an animator working for Art Clokey on the New Adventures of Gumby in 1987. Since then he has worked on numerous stop motion projects including The Nightmare Before Christmas, James and the Giant Peach, Corpse Bride, Coraline, and ParaNorman. He also created StopMotionAnimation.com, a popular online resource for the stop motion community. He is currently working with Mark Osborne and Jamie Caliri on The Little Prince.

Anthony Scott a débuté sa carrière en 1987 comme animateur en travaillant avec Art Clokey sur les Nouvelles Aventures de Gumby. Depuis, il a travaillé sur de nombreux projets de stop motion incluant L’étrange Noël de monsieur Jack, James et la pêche géante, La mariée cadavérique, Coraline et ParaNorman. Il a aussi créé le site web StopMotionAnimation.com, populaire auprès de la communauté de stop motion. Il travaille présentement avec Mark Osborne et Jamie Caliri sur The Little Prince.

A talk with Jamie Caliri, creative director of Dragonframe
During his presentation, Jamie Caliri will screen short works that include the title sequence from The United States of Tara and last year’s stop motion music video for the Shins. He will then walk us through the process of creating the Shins A Rifle’s Spiral from storyboards to colour correction. This talk will cover technical details as well as the collaborative process with production designer Alex Juhasz and animator Anthony Scott. There will also be time for a fun-filled Q&A.
Conférence avec Jamie Caliri, directeur créatif de Dragonframe

Lors de sa présentation, Jamie Caliri nous fera découvrir ses cours métrages, incluant la séquence d’ouverture de la série The United States of Tara et le vidéoclip en stop motion A Rifle’s Spiral du groupe The Shins. Il nous fera part de sa démarche lors de la réalisation de ce vidéoclip, des storyboards à la correction de couleur. Jamie Caliri is a director with a passion for visual story telling. His animated films of recent years have garnered, among other awards, an Emmy and three Annies. Jamie is also the co-owner and creative director for Dragonframe software. He is currently working in Montreal on a feature adaptation of The Little Prince with Kung Fu Panda director Mark Osborne.

Jamie Caliri est un réalisateur passionné par les contes. Ses films d’animation des dernières années lui ont entre autres remporté un Emmy Award et trois Annie Awards. Jamie est aussi le co-propriétaire et le directeur créatif du logiciel Dragonframe. Il travaille présentement à Montréal sur l’adaptation cinématographique The Little Prince avec le réalisateur de Kung Fu Panda, Mark Osborne.

A Gumby Retrospective!
Une rétrospective de Gumby!

Joe Clokey and Joan Rock Clokey will give a presentation on the impact of their family’s studio on the world of stop motion and the greater world of children’s entertainment. Joe has put together a “Gumby through the Years” film that shows Art Clokey’s early stop motion work and the groundbreaking clay animation pilot film Gumbasia, which launched the creation of Gumby.

Joe Clokey et Joan Rock Clokey feront une présentation des différentes productions du studio fondé par leur famille et de l’impact de Gumby dans le domaine de l’animation de Stop Motion et du divertissement pour enfants. Joe a préparé pour nous une rétrospective de “Gumby à travers les années” qui illustre les premiers travaux en stop motion de Art Clokey et du film révolutionnaire Gumbasia, qui a lancé la création de Gumby.

Son of Art and Ruth Clokey, the pioneering creators of Gumby, Joe Clokey was raised as Gumby’s brother. In fact, Gumby first came to life in bedtime stories that Art Clokey created for his children. Today, Joe carries on his parents’ legacy as the head of Gumby’s studio (Premavision) and business affairs.

As a young man in the 60s and 70s, Joe began studying the techniques of clay animation alongside his father at the Clokey studios. Starting in 2001, he continued the family tradition by directing and producing a series of stop motion Gumby spots for ABC, the half-hour TV special, Gumby’s World, and the 2003 one-hour Davey and Goliath holiday special. Most recently, Joe has been working on re-mastering the entire Gumby library and other new Gumby productions and projects.

En effet, Gumby est tout d’abord apparu dans les histoires que Art Clokey racontait à ses enfants avant d’aller au lit. Joan Clokey, the Director of Creative and Marketing for Premavision animation studios, started out much like Art Clokey—as an art teacher. She earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in art at the Cleveland Institute of Art/Case Western Reserve University. Her sense of adventure led her to teach art at American international schools in Kuwait, Ecuador and Japan.

Joan also holds an MBA in Marketing from Indiana University, which serves her well as the lead for Gumby brand management and marketing. Her keen sense of design, passion for landscape painting and photography, and years of hands-on experience as a graphic artist make her a natural for overseeing set design, puppet making, and photography.

Joan Clokey, directrice de la création et du marketing pour Premavision studios, a débuté sa carrière comme Art Clokey, en tant que professeur d’art. Elle a obtenu son baccalauréat et sa maîtrise en art à l’Institut d’Art de Cleveland de l’Université de Case Western Reserve. Son goût de l’aventure l’a amenée à enseigner l’art à l’école Internationale Américaine au Koweït, en Équateur et au Japon.

Joan est également titulaire d’un MBA en Marketing de l’Université de l’Indiana, ce qui lui sert bien en tant que responsable de la gestion de la marque Gumby. Son sens aigu de la conception, sa passion pour la peinture de paysage et la photographie, et ses années d’expérience pratique en tant que graphiste font d’elle un choix idéal pour superviser la scénographie, la fabrication de marionnettes ainsi que la direction photographique.
