About The Sweater and Log Driver’s Waltz
The NFB and Roots have selected images from two classic animated shorts that have captured the hearts of Canadians and animation fans everywhere. Based on an acclaimed short story by Roch Carrier from his own childhood, Sheldon Cohen’s animated film The Sweater (1980) is an NFB classic that appeals to hockey lovers of all ages, as a young player in small-town Quebec, who worships the Habs and his hero Rocket Richard, must instead wear the jersey of their hated rivals, the Toronto Maple Leafs. Winner of 15 film awards, The Sweater was hailed by film critic Leonard Maltin as one of the great works in Canadian animation.
Log Driver’s Waltz (1979) by Oscar-winning NFB animator John Weldon features a beloved folk song by Wade Hemsworth, performed by Canadian music legends Kate and Anna McGarrigle, backed by the Mountain City Four. Log Driver’s Waltz is the whimsical tale of a young girl who longs to marry the best dancing partner to be found―a dashing log driver. This 1979 film is one of five titles chosen by Canada Post for a commemorative stamp series celebrating the 75th anniversary of the NFB.
